What is Kumbh Mela?

Kumbh Mela is a Hindu pilgrimage held in turn at four sacred river places in India. Bathing in the river is its central practice. People also come to pray, hear religious teachers, give charity and meet the ascetics of the akharas.

The four Kumbh places

Each place has its own river, bathing ghats and local customs.

Prayagraj

Prayagraj is built around the Sangam, where the Ganga and Yamuna meet. In Hindu tradition the Saraswati joins them there. Explore Prayagraj Kumbh.

Haridwar

Haridwar’s Kumbh is on the Ganga, around Har Ki Pauri and Brahmakund. The next one runs from 14 January to 20 April 2027. Explore Haridwar Kumbh.

Nashik–Trimbakeshwar

This Kumbh is on the Godavari. It has two separate centres: Ramkund in Nashik and Kushavart in Trimbakeshwar. You cannot walk from one to the other, so plan for both. Read the Nashik–Trimbakeshwar place guide or the 2027 event guide.

Ujjain

Ujjain’s Kumbh, called Simhastha, is on the Shipra river. It includes Ram Ghat and the Mahakaleshwar temple. Explore Ujjain Simhastha.

Compare all four on the Kumbh places page.
